Like My Mother Does

"She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.' Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."
Proverbs 31:25-30

For the last twenty years, I have been blessed with the best mother God could have given me. As God says in the verses above, her strength far exceeds the physical abilities of anyone I have ever met. The wisdom she exudes in her daily life is greater than any education I will receive. I will always remember her as the one to eat last because she always wants to make sure everyone has enough food. Out of all the things she does for me, my favorite thing is the little conversations we have throughout the day. Since moving to college my Freshman year, I have yet to go a single day without talking to her. Whether it is a text message here and there about grades and assignments or the phone calls we have at night to catch up, she never wavers in sitting down and listening to me.

Many people remind me of just how great my mother is, but I do not think they realize that while they are blessed with her presence for a few hours in a day, I have been given the opportunity to be her daughter for the last twenty years. I have grown up under her wing, learned life lessons by her side, and moved off to college with her voice in my head. The greatest lesson she has ever taught me and my sister is knowing how to provide for ourselves without relying on a man. She has always encouraged us to do well in school and to get a job early in life in order to know what it takes to survive in this world. I like to say I learned how to be independent from how she raised us.

Today I choose to celebrate my Mom because she deserves a little attention. She always takes the time to promote me and my life accomplishments, but she doesn't realize my greatest achievements reflect on her. I pray that in the future I am given the opportunity to have a relationship with my children like I have with my mother. It would be a blessing.

Happy Mother's Day to all the beautiful mothers out there who put up with their crazy children like myself. I can only image the pain and torture I have caused my Mom throughout the year, but she still chooses to love me anyone. As God does, they love us with our flaws and imperfections. They accept our apologies when we have done wrong, and they choose to guide us in the right direction regardless of our actions or attitudes. They have the best intentions, and no matter what they will be there for us whether we turn our backs on them or not. They are our mothers.

With Love & Laughter,
Alison
