Hey There, Mr. Grumpy Gills
I think it's safe to say that without my cup of coffee every morning I am pretty close in comparison to Grumpy Cat, both in my attitude and appearance. My parents can be the first to tell you that I have never been a morning person in my entire life, but I can stay up until the early hours of the morning with ease. I can remember my Dad dragging me by my feet out of bed in the morning because I just did not want to get up for school. Now that I am 21 years old and am forced to get up on my own, I feel the need to apologize to my Dad for all those years he struggled getting me up and ready for school. I now understand the frustration because I too have difficulties getting myself up and prepared for my day.
I recently began thinking about the mood I am in when I wake up in the morning. I am constantly questioning God by asking, "Why did you wake me up so early?" What a silly question to be asking God because I really should be thanking him and asking, "Why did you wake me up today? How am I going to be used to glorify your name?"
"Give ear to my words, O Lord; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray. O Lord, in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch." Psalms 5:1-3
I first need to encourage you to begin reading Psalms. I think I have to put it at the top of my list when it comes to one of my favorite books of the Bible. In these verses, I think about my mornings and the attitude I choose to have when I first wake up. I have recently started challenging myself to have a different approach to my day. Before I leave for class (with my cup of coffee so faithfully in my hand), I like to say the Serenity Prayer.
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."
I often wake up fearing the day and what may unexpectedly happen. The Serenity Prayer reminds me to accept the things that may be out of my control and to have the courage to take a stand for something I may not believe in. However, I cannot accomplish any of these without calling upon the Lord and trusting in His plan. I now look forward to starting my day off with excitement and eagerness to see how God plans to use me to glorify His name instead of questioning the invention of alarm clocks.
My favorite thing about starting out my day is getting ready while listening to Praise and Worship music. I think it makes a big difference in the way I approach the morning time. Now instead of getting distracted by what may be on TV, I get caught up in the feeling of loving on and praising God. If anything, music is a constant reminder to me of how God loves on us and uses us. It allows me to talk with Him in a way that isn't possible with others, and in the end I find myself feeling so blessed by the sacrifice He made so that I can live a new day.
I hope this post puts a positive outlook on your week. Mondays can be tough on everyone, especially this time of year when students are returning back to school and the busyness of the New Year sets in. If you are looking for a song that just makes you want to get on your feet and sing at the top of your lungs, check out "Unstoppable God" by Elevation Worship. I promise you won't be disappointed by the lyrics or the way God is moving through you in your life right now.

"Unstoppable God let your glory go on and on
Impossible things in your name they shall be done"
Impossible things in your name they shall be done"
